Wikipedia: Accession of the Republic of Moldova to the UNO - 25th Anniversary

The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and experiences extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi, and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.  Read more..

The Republic of Moldova became an official member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992. In the same year (on November 21), the Post of Moldova issued a series of two stamps devoted to the admission of the country to the United Nations, including the one (12 rubles) added on the prepaid envelope below. Such as all stamps issued in Moldova between June 23, 1991 and August 2, 1993, that stamp was denominated in rubles. On February 1, 2006, that stamp (among others) was put back into circulation with a nominal value of 12 Lei. Designed by Ralf Vogel, these two stamps are featuring the flag of Moldova as well as the United Nations emblem in the background, the headquarters of the organization in New York and the Statue of Liberty. .
