On August 27, 1991, the parliament of the Republic of Moldova adopted a declaration of independence of the country and, only two days later, Romania became the first country to establish diplomatic relations with its culturally and historically close neighbor. Most other countries in the world (including France) initiated diplomatic relations with Moldova in 1992. The Post of Moldova has planned in 2017 more than 20 special cancellations dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of these relations with different countries of the world. On August 29, 2016, a similar postmark was issued for the 25 years of diplomatic relations with Romania.
