Gherman Stepanovich Titov (Russian: Герман Степанович Титов; 11 September 1935 – 20 September 2000) was a Soviet cosmonaut who, on 6 August 1961, became the second human to orbit the Earth, aboard Vostok 2, preceded by Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1. The year 1961 marked the space history with the first four Soviet and American space flights (in chronological order) : Yuri Gagarin on April 12, Alan B. Shepard on May 5, Gus Grissom on July 21 and Gherman Titov on August 6. The Post of Moldova ("Poşta Moldovei") had already put into circulation this year 3 special postmarks devoted to the 55th anniversary of these first 3 spaceflights. On August 6, 2016, the 4th and last postmark was issued, paying this time tribute to the feat of Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov this August 6, 1961.
