On February 3, 2017, the Post of Moldova issued a new special postmark (the fifth of the same type this year) devoted to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Turkey. This protocol was signed between the two countries on February 3, 1992, followed in 1994 by a friendship and cooperation agreement, a legal basis for this diplomatic relations. Both countries have embassies in each country and a free trade agreement is under way to further develop their economic relations. In particular, Turkey maintains close relations with the Autonomous District of Gagauzia in southern Moldova (approximately 160,000 inhabitants), inhabited by a Turkish-speaking and Christian Orthodox minority.
