Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic were officially established on February 21, 1992. In 2008, the two countries opened their respective embassies in Rome and Chişinău and now have close relations, particularly in economic terms, with the presence in Italy of one of the largest Moldovan diasporas (150,000) in the world. At a ceremony held on February 21, 2017 with the Post of Moldova at the Italian Embassy in Chişinău (located next to the main MD-2012 post office), a new special postmark (the 7th of the same type this year) has been put into circulation to celebrate the 25 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Designed again by Lilian Iaţco, this postmark is featuring the water tower in Chişinău and the Tower of Pisa.
