Easter, also called Pascha (Greek, Latin)[nb 2] or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
Since 1994, the Post of Moldova is putting into circulation almost every year some special postmarks during the Orthodox Easter celebrations ("Sfintele Paşti"), the most important religious festival of the year, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. During this period, Moldovan people use in particular this acclamation "Hristos a Înviat!" ("Christ is risen!") to greet each other. It is this acclamation that is mentioned on the special postmark issued this year, from 14 to 24 April 2017, in the city of Bălţi, the "capital of the north" of Moldova, the second economic center of the country after Chişinău. It should be noted that these cancellations evoking Easter are mostly issued in Chişinău and this is only the third time that such an issue takes place in Bălţi (after 1997 and 2013). Read more..
