The city of Soroca, located 160 km north of Chişinău, was founded in 1420 at a place where there was a custom house between Moldova and Ukraine. In 1499, under the orders of the voivode Stephen the Great and the Saint (1457-1504), at the place of an ancient fortress called Alciona, was built a wooden fortress surrounded by bastions.
