On January 18, 2009, the poet and writer Grigore Vieru (1935-2009) passed away in Chişinău, leaving behind him a huge work, dear to the hearts of Moldovans. Quickly becoming the poet-symbol of Moldova, Vieru was at the origin of poetry's reinvigorating in the country and of a part of the restoration of the national consciousness of Moldova. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the Romanian language, which he considered as a poem in itself, Vieru produced poetic works using the pure source of reflection and popular sentiments, often having the mother, the love, secrets of nature or modernity for theme.
