World Poetry Day is celebrated on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999. Its purpose is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world and, as the original UNESCO declaration says, to "give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements".

Unless I am mistaken, this is the very first time the Post of Moldova has put into circulation a postmark dedicated to this World Poetry Day ("Ziua Internaţională a Poeziei") ... This may seem surprising in a country where poetry and poets have so much influence on culture and tradition. But I suppose that the Post of Moldova wished to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the proclamation by UNESCO of this World Poetry Day, celebrated every year on March 21st (which is also the International Day of Forests). This World Poetry Day aims to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to increase the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.. Read more..
