On February 6, 2021, the Post of Moldova issued a postmark dedicated to the 160th anniversary (to the day) of the birth of Soviet scientist, professor and chemist Nikolay Zelinsky (1861-1953), born in Tiraspol, the current capital of Transnistria. After studying at Odessa University and then in Germany, Nikolay Zelinsky, member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was one of the founders of the theory of organic catalysis but remains famous for having invented the first activated charcoal gas mask in the world, in 1915. His invention made it possible to equip the Soviet army from 1916 with more than 5 million filtering gas masks, barely a year after the first ever chemical attack by the Germans in Ieper, Belgium..
