Eugenio Coșeriu (Romanian: Eugen Coșeriu, July 27, 1921 – September 7, 2002) was a linguist who specialized in Romance languages at the University of Tübingen, author of over 50 books, honorary member of the Romanian Academy. In 1970 he coined the terms diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic to describe linguistic variation.

Eugeniu Coşeriu (1921-2002) is a linguist specializing in Romance philology (Romanian and Spanish languages in particular) and considered one of the main philologists of the 20th century.
After studying in Iaşi, he moved to Italy between 1940 and 1949, obtaining the title of doctor of philosophy and philology. In 1951 he moved to Montevideo where he taught linguistics at the University of the Republic until 1958. During this period he published some of his main works in Spanish, including Sincronía, diacronía e historia (1958), a classic of contemporary linguistics, and Teoría del lenguaje y lingüística general (1962).
In 1963 he obtained the chair of Romance linguistics at the Eberhard Karl University in Tübingen (Germany), where he was appointed professor emeritus in 1991. Doctor honoris causa from dozens of universities around the world, he was also honorary member of the Romanian Academy and president of the Society of Romance Linguistics between 1980 and 1983..
