The World Health Organization (WHO) established, in 2004, the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. That day is held every June 14 (Karl Landsteiner's birthday, Austrian biologist and physician who, in 1900, discovered and defined ABO blood groups) and is celebrated every year in almost 200 countries.
