Poet, writer, activist, teacher and theologian, Alexei Mateevici (1888-1917) is considered as one of the greatest Bessarabian poets with many works such as Ţăranii ("Peasants"), Eu cânt ("I sing") or Ţara ("The Country") as well as articles published about religion or Moldovan folklore. But Alexei Mateevici is best known for his romantic poem "Limba noastră" ("Our Language") written one month before his death, of which 5 of the 12 stanzas were chosen to become the national anthem of Moldova in 1994 (music composed by Alexandru Cristea).
