The Battle of Valea Albă, or Battle of the White Valley, was an important event in the history of Moldavia, a historical region shared between present-day Romania and Moldova. This battle took place near Războieni, in Valea Albă, on July 26, 1476, between the army of Moldavia led by the voivode Stephen III the Great (Ștefan cel Mare) and the army of the Ottoman Empire commanded in person by the Sultan Mehmed II. Despite a heroic defense, the Moldavian army was seriously defeated, losses were extremely high on both sides, and chroniclers said that the entire battlefield remained covered with the white bones of the dead, which would explain the origin of the name of "White Valley". Stephen III the Great was forced to retreat with the rest of his army to the fortresses of Neamț, Suceava and Hotin, as the Ottomans continued to plunder the region.. Read more..
