Alexandru Bernardazzi (1831-1907) is the most remarkable figure in the history of Moldovan architecture. He was for twenty years (between 1856 and 1878) the chief architect of the city of Chişinău and the present aspect of the Moldovan capital, of its historic center in particular, preserves many architectural jewels created by this great architect, of Swiss Italian origin. After 1878 he was the architect of the Ukrainian city of Odessa.
