The Moldovan Border Police also commonly known as the Moldovan Frontier Police is the official paramilitary border guard of the Republic of Moldova. It is currently a department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) and exercises its powers and policy in the accordance with the ministry. It was originally founded as the Border Guard Troops, and later the Border Guard Service of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. As soon as the Republic of Moldova became a sovereign and independent state, on September 3, 1991, a decree of the President of the Republic, no. 190 "concerning the state border of the Republic of Moldova", was published, in particular concerning the western sector of the border, with Romania. According to the decision of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, the guarding of the state border of the country was entrusted to the Ministry of National Security with the subordination of the entire forces of the border guard subunits of the former USSR, deployed on the territory. This was the first step towards the creation of the border guard troops of the Republic of Moldova. On June 10, 1992, the President of the Republic issued a decree no. 139 regarding urgent measures to organize the national border guards of the Republic of Moldova.
