50th Anniversary of the Victory in the «Great Patriotic War» (World War II)
Wikipedia: 50th Anniversary of the Victory in the «Great Patriotic War» (World War II)

The Eastern Front of World War II was a theatre of World War II between the European Axis powers and co-belligerent Finland against the Soviet Union, Poland, Norway and some other Allies which encompassed Northern, Southern and Central and Eastern Europe from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945. It was known as the Great Patriotic War (Russian: Великая Отечественная Война) in the former Soviet Union, while in Germany it was called the Eastern Front (German: die Ostfront), the Eastern Campaign (German: der Ostfeldzug) or the Russian Campaign (German: der Rußlandfeldzug).  Read more..

This envelope was issued to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Victory in the «Great Patriotic War» (Second World War). The envelope was issued by the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications (RCC) as part of a scheme to grant free postage to veterans of the War. The envelopes were to have been distributed to all the participating member countries of the RCC. Subsequently, each war veteran was to be forwarded 6 free copies.

The original design for the envelope, presented by the RCC, to the postal authorities of Moldova, was rejected. A special design was created, specifically for use in the Republic of Moldova only. The original design, which was used in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, featured a Soviet soldier, standing in front of a poster, with the text «We’ll get to Berlin». The design for the Moldovan envelope featured the statue of «The Liberator Soldier» at the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park, Berlin.

Each envelope was valid for use in the postal system of Moldova. The envelope could be used to send a letter, without cost, from Moldova, to any address in Moldova, or to any of the countries of the RCC. Each veteran received free 6 envelopes.

A limited quantity of the envelopes was distributed by the Republican Council of Moldovan Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, to philatelists of the Republic of Moldova, through the «Philately» shop in Chișinău. The envelopes went on sale on May 9, 1995.

On that same day, the issue «EUROPA 1995 – Peace and Freedom» was published, with a first day cancellation. Many stamp collectors affixed that cancellation to the veteran’s envelope, to create an FDC.
