World War II (often abbreviated to WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. A state of total war emerged, directly involving more than 100 million people from more than 30 countries. The major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 70 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. On May 8, 2020, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a prepaid envelope (1.75 L - sale price: 3.50 L) dedicated to the 2nd World War and to the 75th anniversary of the victory ("75 de ani de la victoria în cel de-al Doilea Război Mondial") against Nazi Germany. Designed by Oleg Cojocari, this envelope (print run: 5,000) evokes the Eternity Memorial Complex in Chișinău, dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died in battles against the Romanian and German troops during this 2nd World War, in particular during the Jassy-Kishinev Offensive in August 1944 (more than 13,000 Soviet soldiers died, 54,000 wounded during this battle)..
