The Putna monastery (Romanian: Mănăstirea Putna) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery, one of the most important cultural, religious and artistic centers established in medieval Moldavia; as with many others, it was built and dedicated by Prince Stephen the Great. Putna was founded on the lands perambulated by the Putna (which has its source in the Obcina Mare mountains, Bukovina). Stephen the Great is famous for building and influencing the building of dozens of churches and monasteries all over Moldavia (allegedly, he founded a religious edifice after each important military victory). The Putna Monastery houses the tombs of Stephen - nowadays, a place of pilgrimage -, and several of his family members. Voivod and Prince Stephen the Great and Holy (1457-1504), or "Ștefan cel Mare şi Sfînt" in Romanian, is considered as a national hero in Romania but also in Moldova, the symbol of the country's struggle for sovereignty over the centuries, having fight in particular against the Ottoman Empire. July 2th, the day he died in 1504, is today a memorial day in Moldova, dedicated to the memory of Stephen the Great and his reign over the Principality of Moldavia. The Post of Moldova has chosen that day, July 2, 2016, for puting into circulation a beautiful souvenir sheet dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the founding of the Putna monastery by Stephen the Great.
