Chișinău (/ˌkɪʃɨˈnaʊ/ Romanian pronunciation: [kiʃiˈnəw]; historically also known as Kishinev, from Russian: Кишинёв) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Moldova. It is Moldova's main industrial and commercial centre, and is located in the middle of the country, on the river Bîc. The Post of Moldova had already issued a set of three stamps in 1996 to celebrate the 560th anniversary of the founding of the capital of Moldova, Chișinău. The first mention of the city indeed dates from 1436 when the Székelys from Transylvania founded here a garrison of soldiers. On October 13, 2011, the Moldovan Post has issued a new series of five stamps devoted this time to the 575th anniversary of Chişinău. It's this series that appears on the nice official FDC below (print run : 500 copies only !) whose envelope was designed by Vitaliu Pogolşa. Read more..
