The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event being held in Sochi, Russia. Scheduled for 7–23 February 2014, opening rounds in figure skating, skiing, and snowboard competitions were held on the eve of the Opening Ceremony, 6 February 2014. Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC). Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the USSR in 1991. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

The Post of Moldova is issuing stamps devoted to the Winter Olympics since the Lillehammer Games in 1994. Some series of 2 or 3 stamps have been issued for all the following games (Nagano, Salt Lake City, Turin, Vancouver). The new set of 2 stamps (alpine skiing and ice hockey, print run : 30,000 each), designed by Vitaliu Pogolşa, dedicated to the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia was issued on February 7, 2014. It appears on the nice official FDC below (print run : 300 only) with a postmark from Chişinău. From the series issued in 1994 to this new one in 2014, 13 stamps have been issued in total : 5 devoted to biathlon, 4 to alpine skiing, 1 to cross-country skiing, 1 to figure skating, 1 to luge and 1 to ice hockey.
