After the publication of his first literary works, Grigore Vieru (1935-2009) soon became the poet-symbol of Moldova, at the origin of poetry's reinvigorating in the country and of a part of the restoration of the national consciousness of Moldova. Vieru, overwhelmed by the beauty of the Romanian language, which he considered as a poem in itself, produced poetic works using the pure source of reflection and popular sentiments, often having the mother, the love, secrets of nature or modernity for theme. Spiritual son of Mihai Eminescu, Grigore Vieru received the highest international distinctions such as the honorary diploma Andersen for children's literature in 1988 or the Order of the Republic in 1996, the highest distinction of Moldova.
