Butterflies (Rhopalocera) are insects that have large, often brightly coloured wings, and a conspicuous, fluttering flight. The group comprises the superfamilies Hedyloidea (moth-butterflies in the Americas) and Papilionoidea. Butterfly fossils date to the Paleocene, about 56 million years ago.  Read more..

On July 29, 2022, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a very nice series (4 stamps) dedicated to different species of butterflies ("Fluturi" in Romanian). More than 80 species of diurnal butterflies are recorded in Moldova, some of which are threatened or endangered.. Read more..
