First Day Covers (FDCs) for this Issue

Introductory Notes:

On June 23, 1991, all FDCs were issued on postcards of the type «State Arms of Moldova», designed by G. Bronza. The postcards were printed on white, blue and pink paper. We refer to these as the «Series I» postcards.

No FDCs on envelopes were issued on June 23, 1991.

Additionally, two distinct types of first day cancellation were deployed. Type I has a dot over the first letter «i» in the word «Chisinau». Type II omits the dot. Both types of cancellation were deployed and were used, interchangeably, by Posta Moldovei.

No official record exists of the quantities of FDC postcards that were issued on June 23, 1991. Additionally, no record exists of the combinations of attached stamps or of postcard colours or of the sequences of attached stamps or of the cancellation types deployed. MoldovaStamps.org has included all known varieties in our catalogue. We accept the possibility the other varieties may exist.

The FDCs on envelopes were issued retrospectively, during July and August 1991. This was done by special order of the Ministry. These FDCs are the ones described on page 94 of the catalogue of postage stamps (1991-2001), published by Posta Moldovei.

The catalogue of Posta Moldovei is unclear regarding the FDC envelopes (№ PPZ 1). The correct details are as follows:

Envelope with red cachet: Stamp sequence is 1, 2, 3. Total quantity issued: 200. We estimate that there was an equal division between FDCs bearing cancellation type I and type II.

Envelope with blue cachet: Stamp sequence is 1, 3, 2. Total quantity issued: 200. We estimate that there was an equal division between FDCs bearing cancellation type I and type II.

Envelope with gold cachet: Stamp sequence is 2, 3, 1. Total quantity issued: 200. We estimate that there was an equal division between FDCs bearing cancellation type I and type II.

MoldovaStamps.org has also seen other FDCs, using the official envelopes but which bear stamps in nonstandard sequences. The origins of these FDCs are unknown. Posta Moldovei has no records of such material and they do not rule out the possibility of forgery.

Also in July 1991, the Union of Philatelists of Moldova (UFM) commissioned the printing of a second series of the «State Arms of Moldova» postcards. We refer to these as the «Series II» postcards. These were also designed by G. Bronza and they were printed on both white and pink paper. Approximately 1,500 copies of these postcards were distributed to the members of the UFM. The intention was that the members would use the postcards for the creation of «private» FDCs. This activity was done with the permission of the Ministry.

The «Series II» postcards can be differentiated from «Series I» by the addition of a horizontal separation line in the address field. MoldovaStamps.org includes all known varieties of «Series II» postcard FDCs in its catalogue. FDCs using the pink paper postcards seem to be especially rare.

Finally, there exists FDCs on plain envelopes bearing stamps retrieved from trash of the print house. Posta Moldovei confirms that all such material is fake, and uses fake cancellations.
