Valeriu Gafencu (24 January 1921 – 18 February 1952) was a Legionnaire who was active during the Legionary Rebellion. Arrested by the state authorities in 1941, he died 11 years later at Târgu Ocna Prison.
He was declared "Saint of the Prisons" by theologian Nicolae Steinhardt for his "exemplary Christian conduct and devotion to those in suffering ", and the Romanian Orthodox Church was reportedly considering his canonization in 2013.

On January 24, 2021, the Post of Moldova issued a stamp dedicated to the Romanian Orthodox theologian Valeriu Gafencu (1921-1952) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, in the city of Sîngerei (located in Moldova today).. Read more..
Of the 190,000 stamps printed, 138,290 were circulated and the the remaining quantity was destroyed. The stamp was re-printed and re-issued on June 23, 2021.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Of the 200 official FDC envelopes printed, an unknown quantity were distributed to local stamps dealers, without postmarks and without postage stamps. This is in contravention of long-established rules. The offical FDC bears the stamp No. 1154 I only. Although 200 FDC envelopes were printed, it is not known how many were distributed with correct postmark and stamp. Private FDCs made using any material other than No. 1154 I must be considered false.
