The Lower Prut is a scientific reserve located in the Cahul district (southwest of Moldova, near the borders with Romania and Ukraine), founded in 1991, covering an area of 1,691 hectares. This reserve was created with the aim of preserving and studying the ecosystem of the lakes and floodplains of this lower course of the Prut river, in order to create favorable conditions for the reproduction of rare and endangered plant and animal species. 953 km long and having its source in Ukraine, the Prut river acts as a border between Moldova and Romania for most of its course. Two thirds of the surface of this site, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2018, is occupied by Lake Beleu. A wetland, which stretches along the left bank of the Prut river, is home to a mosaic of aquatic ecosystems, grasslands and forests. The main economic activity is agriculture, which provides 90% of the income of the local population. .
